چکیده
This paper summarizes recent experiments conducted by the authors - experiments that studied the behavioral characteristics of large gaze shifts and the neural bases of coordinated movements of the eyes and head.

Electrical stimulation of the supplementary eye fields in the head-free macaque evokes kinematically normal gaze shifts.
The supplementary eye fields (SEFs), located on the dorsomedial surface of the frontal cortex, are involved in high-level aspects of saccade generation. Some reports suggest that the same area could also be involved in the generation of motor commands for the head. If so, it is important to establish whether this structure encodes eye and head commands separately or gaze commands that give rise...
متن کاملA Review Article: Cerebellum and Eyesight
DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.15520/ijmhs.2 014.vol4.iss4.17 The cerebellum plays a significant role in the maintenance of equilibrium and the coordination of head and eye movements. The cerebellum receives extensive information from visual, somesthetic, vestibular and auditory sensory systems, as well as from motor and nonmotor areas of the cerebral cortex. The cerebellum was more active during ind...
متن کاملDisturbances in the control of saccadic eye movement and eye-head coordination in schizophrenics.
Some schizophrenic patients have been known to have frontal cortical dysfunction. In view of the evidence that voluntary purposive eye movements and rapid head movements involve areas of the frontal cortex, investigations of saccade performance have been carried out on schizophrenics in various laboratories. We have compared performance of schizophrenic patients in tasks involving inhibition of...
متن کاملLearning the Optimal Control of Coordinated Eye and Head Movements
Various optimality principles have been proposed to explain the characteristics of coordinated eye and head movements during visual orienting behavior. At the same time, researchers have suggested several neural models to underly the generation of saccades, but these do not include online learning as a mechanism of optimization. Here, we suggest an open-loop neural controller with a local adapt...
متن کاملSilent subcortical brain infarction
Introduction: The silent brain lesions detected by MRI were fairly common not only in first-ever stroke but also in normal elderly subjects. Some recent studies show the possible role of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in acute first-ever ischemic stroke. Methods: In this descrip...
